Mme Verdurin

Mme Verdurin portrait, elstir
Mme Verdurinelstir

The Patronne who wins the long war and ends as princesse de Guermantes, and who is never, in any reading, actually seated.

Mme Verdurin begins as hostess of a small, mocked bourgeois clan and ends with the greatest name in the Faubourg. Her scenes on this page improve across the book and peak in La Prisonnière, when she breaks Charlus in her own drawing room. Her standing dips in the Balbec summers, where the local nobility condescend to her, and recovers as the clan swallows the society that once laughed at it. Belonging stays low and level throughout. Even at her own reception as princesse de Guermantes she goes unrecognized and unpresented, left alone while her guests gather around someone else. The hostess the book crowns is the one it never lets sit down.

Distinguishing passages

She is displaced from the center of her own reception: unrecognized, unpresented, left alone while her guests form a group apart around Charlus.

Mme Verdurin is clearly diminished as the narrator unmasks her declared horror at wartime deaths as superficial performance beneath which lies petty physical contentment.

She is systematically ignored, unrecognized by departing guests, and structurally excluded from credit at her own salon.
