About these readings

Relative strength, read retrospectively

A score summarizes a character’s tendency, at a point in the narrative, to fare better than other characters in shared passages under a particular lens. “Winning” is a playful shorthand—not an absolute social level or a calibrated win probability.

Advantage concerns immediate scene-level gain or loss; prestige concerns changes in visible standing or distinction; inclusion concerns belonging and acceptance. The three scales are not interchangeable.

From passages to fitted histories

The accepted annotation corpus remains fixed at 963 passages. Within a passage, characters with annotated movement are compared with others present, including bystanders. Pair weights are capped so each character contributes at most one total unit of comparison weight per passage. Whole-History Rating fits a smoothed trajectory using later as well as earlier evidence.

These are retrospective readings, not “as you read” forecasts. Smoothing settings remain those of the reviewed construction experiment: 15 for advantage, 60 for prestige, and 5 for inclusion. Forecasting experiments did not determine these reader-facing settings.

Score, evidence, and uncertainty

Standings are ordered by fitted score, without an uncertainty penalty or numbered ranks. Characters with no comparisons are unrated. Sparse evidence can produce high scores: compared-passage and opponent counts remain visible alongside them. Counts are not independent observations.

Each endpoint is a character’s last comparison in that lens, not a common date. Endpoint sensitivity uses 200 chapter and 200 five-passage-block resamples within earlier fixed reference sets of 35, 8, and 9 characters. Those rank envelopes are not confidence intervals, placements in the expanded standings, or uncertainty bands for earlier points. Not assessed does not mean stable.

Editorial

The former rank-based summaries, best-standing labels, and archetype badges are not carried into these readings. The revised summaries describe within-lens fitted histories and evidence; the linked passage annotations remain unchanged.
