The mother of the goodnight kiss: her scenes hold steady from Combray to Venice, and her belonging stands higher than anyone’s.

The narrator’s mother governs the book’s first crisis, the kiss withheld and then granted, and reappears at every turning point after it, in the Guermantes years, in the captivity of Albertine, in Venice. Her scenes on this page are level and quietly favorable across the whole novel, and her standing barely moves. What distinguishes her is belonging, where she stands higher than any other character here from first page to last: the family is hers, and every scene assumes it. The one thing that shakes her is the grandmother’s death, after which the narrator watches grief remake her in her mother’s image. Even then the readings do not fall.

Distinguishing passages

The mother is idealized by the narrator as an irreplaceable, incomparable source of complete love, set explicitly above any hypothetical substitute or later mistress.

She loses all standing as an agent in the scene, convulsed and thoughtless with grief at the foot of the bed.

The mother is shown consumed by an all-effacing grief that submerges her own distinct traits ('son bon sens, sa gaîté moqueuse') and remakes her in her dead mother's image, a severe local diminishment of her own individual selfhood.
