docteur Cottard

docteur Cottard portrait, elstir
docteur Cottardelstir

The punster of the little clan whose scenes go modestly his way and gently improve, while his standing never rises to match.

Cottard begins as the awkward doctor of the Verdurin salon, proud of his puns and unsure when to laugh, and becomes a celebrated clinician whom the narrator credits, once, with a rare grandeur of medical judgment. His scenes on this page tilt gently in his favor and improve across the book, reaching their best in the last volume. His standing does not follow. It sits low and level throughout, as the salon laughs with him without ever quite looking up to him. The novel keeps its irony about his vanity and his snobbery, and the readings keep the distance between being welcome in a room and being esteemed in it.

Distinguishing passages

Cottard's local standing rises sharply as the narrator credits him with a rare, almost heroic grandeur in his critical medical judgment, despite being otherwise deemed insignificant and common.

Cottard is clearly elevated: his quip produces collective laughter and explicit verbal praise from the hostess.

Cottard is locally diminished by the narrator's sustained irony about his snobbish vanity, misjudged social hierarchies, and callous prioritizing of the Verdurin salon over professional and family duty.
