Bergotte

Bergotte portrait, elstir
Bergotteelstir

The writer the narrator worshipped before meeting him: the man disappoints, and the scenes carry him steadily upward anyway.

Bergotte is first a name on the narrator’s bedside table, then a disappointment at the Swanns’ lunch table, a small man with a snail-shell nose whose oddities of speech seem at first like affectation. The novel then reverses the verdict, finding in those oddities the root of his genius, and gives him one of its great deaths, before the little patch of yellow wall. His scenes on this page rise from Combray to the end, and the little evidence on his standing rises too. The readings measure the writer more than the man, and the writer is honored more the further the book goes.

Distinguishing passages

Bergotte's contradiction is presented as strengthening his interlocutor, making the final judgment a joint work; this is the passage's model of real intellectual force.

Bergotte is locally elevated to the status of an all-but-worshipped authority through the narrator's escalating admiration.

Bergotte's oddities of speech and origin, initially read as affectation or vulgarity, are revealed by the narrator as the living root of his literary genius.
